ON THE ROAD – HUMPTY DOO AND CROCODILES

Another day and it was off to Humpty Doo Pub for a lunchtime beer. The pub made famous by bush ballads written by Slim Dusty and Ted Egan. The bar had the world’s largest set of buffalo horns hanging above it. Unfortunately, we weren’t there when Norman the bull, who holds the record for downing a Darwin stubby in 47 seconds visited . The late Prime Minister, Bob Hawke still holds the record and replicated this at this hotel, downing the Darwin stubby in 12 seconds.

We drove past huge Mango farms on our way to our next stop. It was a cruise on the Adelaide River for crocodile feeding. Damian “Wildman” Duffy and Wooki were our colourful tour guides. Whilst they were extremely funny and entertaining, they also knew their stuff. I was apprehensive at first, when during the safety talk, they said you had about 40 seconds to live if you fell overboard but by the end of the cruise I believed them. There are over 100,000 crocodiles in the Northern Territory. A cattle property owner on the Mary River reported that he lost 242 head of cattle to crocodiles last year. The sound of their jaws clamping onto the dangling pieces of buffalo was enormous. Their jaws produce pressure of 2.5 tonnes per square inch. You had to see to believe how high the crocodiles could lift themselves out of the water when being teased with food. (Even stumpy who had lost 3 legs could have entered the Olympic High Jump.) Damo also got the Black Kites to put on a show by throwing raw meat cubes into the air. The keen eyes of these raptors are incredible. If ever you are up this way, I can highly recommend Jumping Crocodile Cruises. The excess funds from the business go towards helping the kids on Groote Eylandt.

We finished the day by having a swim at Berry Springs waterhole. Standing in the water and getting massaged by the small cascading falls was the perfect end to the day.
